Hampton Beach businesses preparing for big summer

HAMPTON, N.H. — Between safety protocols and staffing issues, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a big impact on the tourist industry in New Hampshire, but seasonal business owners say they’re hoping for a better summer this year.

Hampton Beach business owners said they’re preparing for what they believe will be a banner season.

“We’re open and the beach is opening now, so we just want people to come to Hampton Beach and enjoy the summer,” said Kevin Brown, of the Sea Ketch Restaurant.

Air and water temperatures may still be cool, but summer bookings are hot.

David Hartnett, of the Mainsail Motel & Cottages, said three-quarters of his rooms are already reserved for the season, and the cottage units are sold out.

“Getting through coronavirus was huge,” he said. “We had a record year last year. We’re on pace to have a better year this year.”

“We have a lot of Canadians that we haven’t seen in a while,” said Chuck Rage, of the Pelham Resort.

Overseas J-1 visa students are also now able to return, filling critical tourist industry jobs.
