Review of Federal and State Youth Employment Laws

Presenter: James P. (“Jim”) Reidy, Shareholder, Sheehan Phinney Bass & Green, PA

Description: Unemployment is low in New Hampshire. Many positions remain vacant and the pressure to increase wages and retain talent is high. As we come into the busy summer season, many employers in the hospitality industry hire youth workers to fill positions, especially to meet seasonal demands. There are several federal and state youth employment laws, and employers need to strictly comply with these statutes. Failure to do so can result in significant civil penalties. This program will review those requirements and provide some suggestions on how to stay in compliance and avoid costly penalties. This program will cover:

  • The definition of a “youth worker” under federal and state laws
  • The definition of “hazardous” work
  • Restrictions on days and hours of work
  • Tips on compliance with federal and state youth employment laws
  • Potential civil penalties for noncompliance
  • Recordkeeping suggestions
