Portsmouth’s downtown boutique inns offer history — and alternative to big hotels

Jeff McMenemy, Portsmouth Herald

PORTSMOUTH — When people visit this Seacoast New Hampshire city, they want to embrace its rich historic character, but they also want to enjoy “an upscale and unique experience” when they choose where to stay.

Doug Palardy is the owner of The Inn Downtown, an 1809 former two-family home that has been transformed into a boutique hotel. He says visitors can have both historic and modern qualities if they stay at his inn.

“We’re like a modern boutique property in a historic setting,” Palardy said. The Inn Downtown is located on The Hill in the middle of historic downtown Portsmouth as the name suggests. “People walk into the room and they’re so happy that there’s not antiques everywhere. They want the room to look like they’re the first person who’s stayed there. Our rooms are clean, modern, upscale and not over-accessorized.”
