Annual Meeting, Expo and Star Awards Dinner
2015 Annual Meeting, Expo and Stars of the Industry Awards Dinner

New Hampshire’s hospitality industry leaders gathered at the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside on November 9 to celebrate individual achievements at the New Hampshire Lodging and Restaurant Association’s (NHLRA) annual Hospitality Expo and Stars of the Industry Awards Dinner. The event also featured a Hospitality Industry Forum, which covered four critical issues facing the industry in the coming year: worker’s compensation and labor laws, 401k and succession planning, changes in the Affordable Care Act, and the EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) chip-enabled credit card liability shift.

Following the forum, the Hospitality Expo offered the opportunity for NHLRA members to learn about new products, ideas and innovations from industry suppliers. A highlight of the expo was appetizers prepared and served by members of the Portsmouth High School ProStart culinary team.

Earlier in the day during at the NHLRA Annual Meeting, appreciation awards were presented to outgoing NHLRA board members Karen Meyer, Three Chimneys Inn; Jim Hill, Clark-Mortenson Agency; Chuck Randall, Fox Ridge Resort; Eric Roberts, Lui Lui; Angela Scanlon, Southern Wine & Spirits; and Brian Shea, The Barley House. The board also elected a new chairman for the coming year: Sim Willey, chief executive officer of Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant in Meredith.

2015 Stars of the Industry Award Winners

Restaurant Employee of the Year

A good team can make or break your business in short order. Each year we recognize one person from the restaurant industry who stands out as a true team player: someone who demonstrates excellence in customer service, is willing to go the extra mile, and maintains a positive attitude – even in the pressure cooker environment that is the restaurant industry.

Lodging Employee of the Year

No business can be successful without the right mix of experienced and reliable staff. In the lodging industry it is essential to find employees who sincerely want to make people happy. Our Lodging Employee of the Year Award singles out someone who embodies this spirit of hospitality: a staff member who goes out of his or her way to provide the guest with a truly welcoming experience.

Allied Member of the Year

Allied members are organizations with a vested interest in the hospitality industry, and NHLRA is fortunate to have a base of allied members who actively support our efforts and our members. Ed Bednarowski, the late vice president of sales and marketing at Central Paper Products, was a long-time champion of the hospitality industry and the NHLRA. This award is named in his honor.

Our educational programs are designed to unite the classroom and industry in developing the best and brightest talent into tomorrow’s hospitality and culinary leaders. Our Educator of the Year Award recognizes someone who not only teaches practical skills, but who sets a high standard for excellence, and helps his or her students build a foundation that will last a lifetime.

According to Dawn Sweeney, CEO of the National Restaurant Association, "Chefs are the creative heart of the operation, the source of remarkable experiences that can become treasured lifetime memories.” Here in New Hampshire, our pool of culinary talent runs deep.

Innkeeper of the Year

Successful innkeepers are truly excited by the opportunity to create memorable travel experiences for their guests. They are dedicated to the ideal of customer service.
