Stone Church under new ownership
By: Max Sullivan

Michael and Cheryl Hoffman have been spending a lot more time in church lately, recently becoming the newest owners of the venerable Stone Church bar and music venue atop Zion Hill.

The Hoffmans purchased the Stone Church’s building and adjacent lot Aug. 2 from Adam Schroadter, who has owned the property and business since 2008. The new owners say they want to continue operating the bar as a music venue and keep the Stone Church’s tradition alive as a haven for live music for the Seacoast. The Stone Church has been host to both local and national touring acts since the 1960s. The building was originally a public meeting house built in the 1800s.

“It’s a big part of the Seacoast, it’s part of Newmarket, it used to be a central attraction to a lot of Newmarket, and it still is,” said Michael, who is also the Newmarket town building safety and health officer. “It’s a great music venue. It’s something that we can bring back and revive the music scene a little more.”

Schroadter, a former state representative and assistant secretary of state in Concord, said work and family commitments have made it difficult to focus on running the Stone Church. When the Hoffmans approached them about purchasing the bar, he said his family needed to consider the offer. He said he has been proud to be part of the Stone Church’s heritage and believes the venue is now in good hands with the Hoffmans, as well as the staff the Schroadters put together, which will be retained by the new owners.
