In the North Country and statewide, demand grows for locally sourced foods, especially meats
By: John Koziol

Locally sourced food is hot, which is creating opportunities and challenges for chefs and farmers, particularly in northern New Hampshire.

Although not a new trend, locally sourced food is riding a wave of popularity thanks in part to groups like the North Country Farmers Cooperative, northcountry.localfoodmarketplace.com, and restaurants like Moxy in Portsmouth and Stages in Dover.

Further inland, the Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa (which recently hosted the NCFC’s annual meeting) and The Mountain Club on Loon are both taking advantage of the bounty and variety of produce, meats, cheeses and baked goods crafted by local producers.

“We try to keep everything local,” said Nathan Varney, the executive chef at the Mountain View Grand in Whitefield, where he oversees the year-round operation of The 1865 Wine Cellar and The Harvest Tavern, “not just the food, but even who embroiders our shirts.” Read more at UnionLeader.com.
