The Ashworth by the Sea hotel was sold for $14.5 million last week to the Massachusetts-based Linchris Hotel Corporation.

The hotel at 295 Ocean Blvd. was sold according to a deed filed June 24 in the Rockingham County Registry of Deeds. It was previously owned by Colwen Hotels based in Portsmouth.
The hotel was built in 1912 by Colonel George Ashworth and was one of the first hotels on Ocean Boulevard, according to the Ashworth’s website. The hotel was purchased by Paul and Norman Grandmaison in 1952, Paul Grandmaison previously being the first general manager of the hotel.
The Grandmaisons owned the hotel until 2006 when they sold it to S&S Hotels, based in Hooksett. Since then, nearly $2 million has gone into restoration and upgrades of the historic hotel.
High profile people have stayed at the Ashworth over the years, including Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, BB King and the Marshall Tucker Band.

Linchris owns numerous hotels along the East Coast, as well as in the Midwest and Texas. They also own hotels in Manchester, Salem, Tilton and Littleton.
