New plan proposed for former Merrimack Hotel property

Plans for a new 123-room extended stay hotel are being proposed at the former Merrimack Hotel parking lot, the first phase of a major redevelopment project for the blighted site.

Although there are no immediate plans to demolish the unused hotel near Cinemagic, the new hotel being recommended by WoodSpring Hotels will be constructed nearby on 2 acres of pavement that will be subdivided at 4 Executive Park Drive.

“This would be a new outparcel of the existing hotel parcel. This is expected to be the first step of redevelopment of the entire site,” said Tim Thompson, community development director. “We don’t know what will be next or what will happen to the current (hotel) building.”

Next week, the Merrimack Planning Board will review the proposed subdivision and site plan for the new hotel.

“WoodSpring Suites Hotels proposes to construct a four-story structure with 123 rooms encompassing over 48,000 square feet,” according to plans written by Jesse Johnson of Bohler Engineering. “As an extended-stay hotel, this use has the benefit of patrons typically accessing the site in a manner typical of residential housing.”

Each room will include a kitchenette with a refrigerator, cooktop, microwave, sink and workspace.

If approved, this will be WoodSpring Hotels’ first development in New Hampshire. The company currently operates more than 200 hotels in 32 states. WoodSprings Hotels originated as Value Place Hotels, but was rebranded last year. Read more from the
