Construction of fifth Glen House at Mount Washington to commence in June
By John Koziol

Construction of the fifth Glen House hotel is expected to commence in early June, according to Howie Wemyss, the general manager of the Mount Washington Auto Road, who added that the effort to privately raise the $11 million needed for the project is going well.

In January, the Coos County Planning Board granted conditional site plan approval to the Mount Washington Summit Road Company for a 65-room, three-story hotel on the grounds of the former Great Glen Trails Ski Lodge.

The lodge was located at the base of the auto road, just north of and across from the Base Lodge on Route 16, and it, like the last Glen House in 1967, was destroyed by fire, as were its three predecessors beginning with the original Glen House in 1852.

The new hotel will be fitted with a sprinkler system to meet the current safety code, and although located near a busy roadway would have rooms with decks, patios or porches on the west side of the building, facing the heart of the Presidential Range, with views of the Great Gulf Wilderness and Mounts Washington, Clay, Jefferson, Adams and Madison.

The hotel would have an indoor pool and a restaurant, and Wemyss has said it would fill a need for lodging beds in that part of the Mount Washington Valley while dovetailing nicely with the auto road’s other amenities. Read more from
