New Portsmouth restaurant offers taste of Middle East
By Suzanne Laurent

A new restaurant on Lafayette Road will satisfy those craving authentic Middle Eastern food, and introduce new spices and flavors to those not familiar with the tasty, healthy offerings.

Habibi, a Middle Eastern café, opened in March in the former location of Joe’s N.Y. Pizza, and owners Enas and Sam Abd of Dover said business is steadily picking up as the place is discovered.

Enas said the dishes are popular with college students as they can get a healthy affordable meal in towns such as Durham, but she finds locals are curious about different offerings at Habibi.
She said, though, customers are eager to try Habibi’s stuffed grape leaves, Arabic fattoush salad, chicken or beef shawarma, and stuffed peppers.
“We use fresh ingredients and make all our dishes from scratch every day,” Enas said. “They are from generations of old family recipes.”
The word “Habibi” is a term of endearment in Arabic meaning “love.”
“We chose this name because our customers are dear to our hearts,” Enas said. “Hospitality is an integral part of our rich cultural and culinary heritage, and we look forward to sharing it with you.”
Sam Abd has always been in the restaurant business. He attended culinary school in Connecticut and worked at his brother’s four Italian restaurants in Massachusetts. Read more at
