Wave of consolidation hits NH beer distributors

Beer drinkers probably won’t notice, but two companies that distribute Anheuser-Busch beer to stores and bars in adjoining territories in New Hampshire are joining forces.

Concord-based New Hampshire Distributors is buying the A-B distribution rights from Hooksett-based Great State Beverages with plans to interview and hire an undetermined number of Great State’s 120 workers.

“Both are family-owned businesses with a long history in the beverage industry in New Hampshire,” said Chris Brown, NHD co-owner and president.

Brown attended a Monday night meeting at which Great State workers were told about the pending sale.

Chalk the deal up to another part of the economy where size matters.

“Like most industries, there’s a lot of consolidation going on, and the consolidation is to produce a scale where you’re most effective in the marketplace,” said Michael McGinn, Great State’s president.

Brown said NHD is looking into leasing Great State’s Hooksett operation in the short term and may expand at its Concord location in the long term.

New Hampshire Distributors, founded in 1946, sells 4.2 million cases of beer and nonalcoholic beverages a year. Great State, founded in 1956, sells 2.8 million cases a year. Read more from unionleader.com.
