Harold Square returns, offering up the 'wow' factor

When Mike Cook and his wife, Maureen, were in the process of menu planning at their new restaurant here, they had to reckon with the viability of the nitro chicken sandwich, which piles chicken tenders sky-high with cheddar, bacon, ranch and a special sauce.

“I made it for her, and she was like, ‘How are customers supposed to eat it?’” Mike recalled. “And I was like, ‘I don’t care. It’s not my problem. I get it to them; they gotta figure out how to eat it.’”

He may talk tough about portion sizes, but the Cooks and the cooks at Harold Square put a lot of care and homemade craftsmanship into the New York-style deli and pizza joint. As the new owners, they reopened the place in January after about a year of dormancy.

Located on Rockingham Road near Interstate 93’s Exit 5 in north Londonderry, Harold Square was a popular neighborhood spot when it opened eight years ago.

The original owner sought to bring the flavors of a New York deli to New Hampshire. The name is a play on Manhattan’s Herald Square — though landlord Harold Little, who built the square building that houses the restaurant 20 years ago, likes to joke that it serves as a tribute to him, too.

But after the restaurant changed hands a couple years ago, the new owner had less success, and the restaurant folded. Little was thrilled to recruit Mike Cook to revitalize the place — and he said the community is happy that Harold Square is back as well. Read more from
