RiverWalk at Loon will reinforce tourism in Lincoln

Scheduled to open in the spring, the first phase of RiverWalk at Loon Mountain, a 145,000-square-foot, 80-unit resort, is a story of economic revitalization in the town of Lincoln.

The resort is constructed on the site of the former Franconia Paper Mill. The mill, started in 1893, initially operated as a saw-mill and was affiliated with the largest logging railroad in New England. This once dominant industrial entity was a large regional employer. The mill went through several owners, several rounds of bankruptcy and had issues with meeting Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for water quality (as early as 1962). The mill finally closed in June 1980. Several of the mill buildings were demolished but the majority of the site remained contaminated and abandoned for many years.

The site came to the attention of InnSeason Resorts (Southern Peaks Development, LLC) in 2003. They purchased the property and worked with Aries Engineering to clean up the site and obtained a brownfield cleanup revolving loan fund that was administered by the N.H. Department of Environmental Services and funded by the EPA. Work on the site started in 2008 with asbestos removal in the existing mill buildings and demolition of all remaining structures.
