Portsmouth chef Matt Louis named semifinalist for James Beard Award
By Rachel Forrest

Matt Louis, chef and owner of Moxy restaurant, was nominated by the James Beard Foundation in the category of Best Chef in the Northeast region for the 2016 James Beard Awards.

Louis was also a semifinalist last year. Moxy opened in May 2012 and the chef opened Franklin Oyster House in May 2015.
“When we were nominated last year it was a stepping stone to push ourselves and make an even better experience,” Louis said. “It’s an honor to be nominated a second year. It’s a full team effort and an honor for everyone on the team.”
Dubbed “the Oscars of the food world,” the James Beard Awards cover 10 regional Best Chef categories as well as national categories like Outstanding Chef, Rising Star Chef of the Year and Outstanding Bar Program. The foundation also awards honors for book, broadcast media, journalism, and restaurant design. Local food writer Kathy Gunst was a winner of a journalism award in the Home Cooking category last year.
Past local semifinalists in the Best Chef Northeast category include chef Evan Hennessey from Dover’s Stages at One Washington, who was named a semifinalist in 2014, and Evan Mallett, chef and owner of Black Trumpet Bistro in Portsmouth, a semifinalist in 2011, 2013 and 2014.
“There are a lot of great chefs here and for every chef who gets on that list, there are many who deserve to be on it as well,” Louis said. “The nomination is great for our community and it’s incentive to push all of us to focus on quality and do a little bit every day to improve and bring a great experience. Portsmouth has been fortunate enough to get more attention and accolades in recent years and it’s phenomenal for all of us.” Read more from the
